Vast Differences Seen Between these New Doctors and Their Predecessors

Young, idealistic, optimistic men and woman have always been drawn to the medical profession. But recently the focus has shifted to those fields of study where the monetary rewards and other material benefits of a medical career are passed over in favor of the personal fulfillment one achieves by working for the public good.

As an illustration, a physician in his late 20s, rejected a paycheck in excess of $30,000 from several organizations including medical programs, drug manufacturers, insurance organizations, and private associations. Instead he is paid $12,000 a year by the organization he founded while he was still in medical school. These doctors are instead working to improve the quality of medical care available to patients in communities all across America.

He has stated that he has no intentions of practicing any customary medicinal techniques. Serving specific neighborhoods, with legal, educational, dental and medical services, his organization is funded by the U.S. government to study how to deliver these needs to the people. He feels it is very important that you look at all the needs of any community, not just the healthcare problems. The basic problem is that there are simply not enough opportunities for the student whose desire is to innovate within the confines of the present system.

The state of health care in the US has long been the subject of heated debate. Medical schools are starting to react but they require encouragement. Under these circumstances, the help is our medical students; practically all of America's medical schools have implemented new classes in community medicine as part of their program. The majority of the medical students are now aware of these problems and want to work towards fixing them.

According to the dean of one of the top medical schools in the country, today's students have a stronger sense of social awareness, a genuine spirit of compassion, seriousness of purpose, and deep-rooted concern for injustices. The previous generation have been somewhat sedate regarding this sense of moral responsibility that the young people coming up through the system now exhibit. Achieving his purpose will be more of a cause for the new generation and they will tend to spend more of their energy and time committed to just causes. Their interests are very different from hose of yesterdays generation in terms of lifestyle and values. He has major concerns over not being engrossed in social suppression.

The doctors of past generations were always worried about their social status. They were members of a fun-loving, pompous society, concerned with a more materialistic, highly structured lifestyle which offered comfort, security and success. They seek to distance themselves from the previous generation of medical school graduates and administrators.

The era of community medicine, where students learn to care for the whole being and that medical care is accessible to all regardless of financial situation, has begun. One associate professor who supports and helps lead these reform efforts points out that while billions of dollars are spent on medical care, people are actually not any happier now than they have ever been. He also claims that without change, this trend will continue. Instead, people may end up in worse condition if changes are not implemented soon.

Fortunately, an organization has been formed to encourage medical students to concentrate more on public and environmental health, and preventive medicine. One of their programs includes sponsoring community oriented medical projects to help benefit communities and encourage aspiring doctors. Their goal is to create a more comprehensive medical school curricula that includes training on community health issues via the use of community outreach projects.

One student who has been the program director of the organization stated that a high percentage of students who worked in various projects had indicated a desire to return to the area to practice medicine. Aside from establishing community projects and medical clinics in destitute communities, a large number of medical schools and hospitals have expressed their interest in coaching minority group physicians.
