The Importance of a Good Night’s Sleep

No-one knows the misery of nights spent tossing and turning until they have experienced them. You wake up from the bits of sleep you do manage to snatch feeling worse than ever and all you have to look forward to is a day of chronic tiredness and irritability, followed by more of the same punishment at night. When I told my friend about this, she told me that over half the population experience sleep disturbance during their lives and that she had suffered for months before she found the solution.

She told me about memory foam pillows and mattresses, which are rapidly growing in popularity. These mould themselves to the contours of the body to give natural support to your posture so that you sleep in the perfect position. They are constructed from a substance called visco-elastic, which apparently was developed by the NASA scientists back in the sixties, when they need to improve comfort and safety for the astronauts during lift-off and landing. The foam tailors itself to the body for even support and weight distribution, without causing any pressure points.

This visco-elastic is fixed to a base made of polyurethane foam which lets air flow between the layers to keep it buoyant and resilient. The mattresses are used in numerous hospitals and nursing homes and are especially helpful for patients who are immobile after surgery or serious illness because they do not cause pressure points. These mattresses have been great favourites with the Americans and our northern European neighbours, so it’s about time we caught up with trends.

There are some real advantages to these mattresses as they are lightweight and do not require turning in the same way that regular mattresses do. In laboratory tests, they were shown to reduce nightly tossing and turning due to an uncomfortable sleeping position by over 80%. They are also anti-bacterial and anti- allergenic, which makes them extremely useful for people with asthma or dust-mite allergies.

My friend had had her mattresses for nearly a year and she told me how cosy and warm they are in winter as they act like a cocoon, keeping in body heat. However, she did say her husband sometimes found the mattress too warm in the summer. It is the way the foam reacts to body temperature that enables them to mould to the body’s contours and for which the material gets the name ‘memory foam’. This moulding can, however, restrict movement and may even cause slight difficulty if you try to get out of bed suddenly.

The good thing about memory foam mattresses is that they can be purchased in a wide range of sizes to fit any standard bed frame, as long as it is well-ventilated. They range from small single to super king size. You can also choose different depths.

I asked her about pillows and she told me she also had memory foam pillows which work in pretty much the same way. They shape to your head and neck, supporting you so that automatically sleep in the correct position. They fit into standard pillowcases and are also hypo-allergenic and dust mite resistant. On top of all that, they can even reduce snoring!

I was so excited by all I had heard that I determined to go online as soon as I got home and look for a stockist of memory foam pillows and mattresses. It sounds like the perfect solution to my problem and I can’t wait to get my own memory foam mattress and pillow and start enjoying a restful night’s sleep at long last.
