What are the FDA’s Warnings about OsmoPrep?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that you should not take OsmoPrep if:

• you have had a kidney biopsy that shows you have kidney problems because of too much phosphate; or
• you are allergic to sodium phosphate salts or any of the ingredients in OsmoPrep.

To prevent OsmoPrep kidney damage, you should tell your doctor about all of your conditions, previous surgeries, alcohol usage, and diet prior to taking it. You should also tell your doctor about any medications that you are currently taking, whether they are prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs.

At-Risk Patients
Despite the OsmoPrep black box warning, patients 18 and older can still use OsmoPrep for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy or other procedures. However, the FDA recommends that people use caution using OsmoPrep if they are in the following risk groups:

• People older than 55;
• People with dehydration, kidney disease, acute colitis, or delayed bowel emptying; and
• People taking certain medicines that affect kidney function, such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and possibly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
