In the Philippines where I came from, a lot of students dream about becoming nurses one day. Quite a few of these dreams however are motivated by money. You see nurses are very much in demand overseas and the salaries that nurses receive are astronomically higher compared to what local nurses receive. I guess there's a lot of points for practicality too. The Philippines is not a rich country. It is common in the Philippines to live together in housing compounds so the family stays in-tact. The advantage of living together is that you are always surrounded by people who love and care about you. On the downside, it's almost a given that you have to share with everyone what you have. Whenever somebody in the family has financial problems it feels like you need to contribute as well. But this is getting off topic. Nursing, I think, is one of the great vocations of our age. I see Nursing as standing shoulder to shoulder with Teaching as one of the greatest professions. I've decided to take up nursing despite my folks prodding me to take up medicine instead because I think nurses are more aware of how patients feel. Nurses are more attuned to patients' physical and emotional suffering. No wonder that patients respond more to nurses than to their doctors. Sometimes doctors are seen as unfeeling robots who are more concerned with the clipboard containing the patients data. Doctors just make an appearance for a brief time, look at the charts and then proceed to the next patient. I took up nursing because of this. In my hometown for example, doctors charge really exorbitant professional fees regardless of a patient's financial capability. I had first hand experience with this when an uncle got sick. One of his doctors asked him to undergo a series of very expensive tests and then billed him accordingly afterwards. When I heard of it, I was really mad at the doctor. Not all doctors are the same of course, but if you live in a small time where there are only very few doctors, you kinda think of them as birds of the same feather. In a few weeks from now I will be a nurse. The result of the nursing board exams I took is due to be released at the end of this month and I'm confident that I will pass. I plan on working in the Philippines for a few years to help out my countrymen. I will apply my skills in nursing by working in the provincial hospital and care for poor people and provide them with the best nursing care I can. I plan to work overseas after my stint in my hometown so I can also prepare a better future for myself but my priority will always be to provide the best nursing care. I am here to help people first and not just to make money off them. I do hope that my ideals over time won’t be perverted and I stay true to what I’ve always believed.
