I remember my dentist 10 years ago who knew what I was talking about and actually did something about it. He would not rush anything and would wait till the anesthesia has taken effect before proceeding with the treatment. He will spend time to check on my x rays and a do a few tests to find the most effective nerve to target for the novocain to numb more locations in one shot. When I left that area, however, I could not find anyone in my new place who understands my anesthesia issue in that manner so I stopped going to the dentist. I decided to do something about this dread when I felt a terrible toothache about a year ago. I went to have my teeth checked by the dentist referred by my wife's friends. I was eventually referred to a specialist in San Francisco for people like me when he had a hard time with the novocain. I did not have any problem getting comfortable with this dental office because it was one of the few who gives general anesthesia during dental work. A comprehensive survey was handed to me by the staff to be filled up and it tackled most of the issues I have. A section was even able to cover my fleeing instinct. I have shelved several dental appointments and the survey managed to ask me that. To do all the work that was needed on my teeth in one visit, they put me under general anesthesia in the office. General anesthesia is too expensive for a patient to afford every single visit. I had to pay an extra amount of $1,000 on the anesthesia alone. In my situation, I needed deep cleaning and a lone tooth needed prep for a crown procedure. The caried surface of one of my teeth has been shaven and one more tooth was prepped for root canal. I could not remember the duration of the entire procedure. I do not like the thought of returning four times to finish all the procedures and that is most likely my experience if not for the general anesthesia. If you put the cost having local anesthesia four times plus taking four days off work in one side and one day of general anesthesia and a day's appointment on another, it will take less than a second to decide. The general anesthesia did not make me ill but it did make me sleep the whole day. For three days, my wife was feeling ill after her four wisdom teeth were cut out in a single procedure under general anesthesia. My insurance doesn't pay for the sedation, but they did pay for all of the other work up to approximately $1,000. However, another procedure was needed for one tooth and that is a root canal surgery with sedation that costs $1200. Because of this, my insurance that year got maxed out quite early. I knew that if this will happen again, I will go through the same steps. I cannot imagine coming out alive from those procedures with just a local anesthesia and I must have just not gone. Since I had my major work done, I've just been going in for teeth cleaning, which doesn't involve needles. This does not by any means tell you that I am no longer terrified about undergoing any dental procedure.
