Is laser the best new kid on the dental block?

It is almost impossible to see people happy over a trip to the dental office. The reasons may be founded or unfounded, but the fact remains that over the years, dentists have taken their share of grief from those who probably could have prevented tooth problems, had they listened to their dentists. Over the last several years, technology has continued to enter the dental field, and this mean words like whisper jet micro air abrasion, drill free, and a favorite among many, pain free flowing in continuously.

The new hit in the dental office is the laser. Inward bound, to the gum pockets is what this enables him to do and ultimately, any infected linings in there are removed with the laser. Furthermore, laser kills the bacteria in the infected blocks. This generally means that healing is faster and there is less pain on the part of the patients when it is combined with the normal root scaling. This is in essence saying that the good dental health status of the patient can be maintained longer.

The computer controlled anesthesia system is called the wand and this entails a tiny needle along with a topical anesthetic to make the mouth go numb. The machine that controls the amount of anesthesia and the speed at which it is administered is the computer. Removal of beginning decay with no shots, no drills, and fillings that are about one fourth the size of traditional fillings can now be undertaken by dentists easily and this is all thanks to the micro air abrasion system technology.

With a laser involved, dentists can cure filling material in about 5 seconds, rather than waiting for 40 seconds or more for the material would take to cure on its own which is the typical rate. Do not forget that teeth whitening no longer entails so many taxing sessions as this can be done once only thanks to this laser. On top of aiding dentists, this breakthrough also illuminates patients on the dental procedures as well as what they should expect from their trips to their dentists.

A computer, called a CAESY, which stands for Clinically Advanced Education System, is used to call up specific procedures for each patient. The CDR is a tool that is fully integrated with other computers in the building and such enables the patient's entire dental history to be entered into the computer as well. The patient's photograph, dental notes, restorative chart and X rays, taken without film are all contained in this information.

With the use of the film less X rays, patients are less exposed by 90 percent to radiation than in the usual X rays devices. The set of teeth of the patient can easily be captured now all thanks to the intra oral camera device. By showing patients enlarged pictures of their own teeth, dentists can point out the exact areas of decay. While dentists and hygienists point out the importance of brushing and flossing, good dental hygiene goes farther than just a pretty smile.

Cardiovascular disease is linked to gum problems or periodontitis and this has been proven in a recently launched study. Research studies on these were undertaken more than a decade ago, but then we only get to see the results on this discussed in more detail only recently. There is clearly a change in the patterns whereas infections in the gums truly have something to do with the many systemic conditions, particularly those that are multifactorial chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and preterm pregnancy and such is our recent discovery. We can now welcome a huge change on our understanding of how oral disease intermingles with systemic health.

These new dental materials can be so appealing to those who require standard treatment like root canal, crowns or fillings. Visually, several new advances take porcelain crowns for instance, give adequate tooth and gum care but has already shed off the unpleasant metal look that sometimes accompanies the work. A ton of the advances being made have to do with the way the finished product looks but never forget that the underlying theme remains the same which is making each procedure as efficient and pain free as it should be. We can easily give pain free dentistry today all thanks to this knowhow.
