About compulsive eating disorders Compulsive eating disorders are oftentimes referred to as compulsive over-eating or food addictions. They are characterized by a relationship with food that would be classified as abnormal or obsessive/compulsive in nature. Typically, the treatment facilities that offer compulsive eating disorder treatment programs address and treat the condition in one of two ways. Either they are treated as a behavioral disorder or a food addiction, therefore employing therapy modalities specifically applicable to one of the other. The person who is suffering from this type of disorder partakes in frequent binge eating episodes or uncontrollable eating. They may feel out of control when these occur and will oftentimes eat enough food to make them extremely uncomfortable. This is generally followed up by the individual feeling depressed or guilty. The are key difference between a compulsive eating disorder and a condition such as bulimia is that compulsive overeaters do not follow up with the compensatory behavior like the bulimic individual does. In other words, the bulimic typically follows up their eating with defensive or self-induced vomiting. Compulsive overeaters usually do not fast, induce vomiting, or take laxatives like bulimics usually do. This type of eating disorder is characterized by consuming food even when you are not hungry. The disorder also exhibits itself in the form of a pattern of spending excessive amounts of time devoted to fantasizing and/or thinking about eating alone. Additionally, the typical result from this type of behavior is either obesity or a significant and sudden weight gain.
