80s Fashion and Changing Fashion Trends

70’s and 80’s are remembered by many being the harbingers of various fashion styles and statements. The experiments carried out in designs impressed millions in those times. These years also saw a rapid change in the fashion world. MTV, which appeared on the scene then, changed fashion, music and many other things. People were trying to redefine themselves during these years. The changes that both men and women brought upon themselves were abrupt.

During ‘70s people used to wear tight upper wear with a loosely fitting bottom wear. This got completely reversed in the decade of 80’s where women used to wear bold dresses having shoulder pads and men used shirts in full sleeves which were stitched in costly material together with loose fitting baggy trousers which were slightly tapered at the ankle. New designer romantic look started the “romantic movement” being inspired by the former punks. New crazes such as designer jeans and “leather in clothing” were a trend among the public.

Business women started to wearing pointed and high heeled shoes. At parties, women wore glossy, bright colored and transparent shoes.. Tracksuits and jogger pants shared the mantle for leisure wear during those occasions. The music bands of this era also invented their own style statement of faded jeans which were acid washed and denim jackets as well as tattoos & piercings were new highlights of their fashion trend. Earrings became a trend for men to wear. Hairstyle included lots of mousse which resulted in a shiny voluminous look. Colored and streaked hair came into fashion. Women appeared in short and men in long hair.

The rich and powerful used jewellery engraved with valuable gemstones. Women used peculiar long earrings which often were not matching and sometimes they'd wear only one earring. Fine silver and gold chains, punk style, neon colours in jewellery defined trends. Jewellery with enamel and modern styles were chosen over the old designed jewellery. During the early 80s digital watches with metal bands were significant rage among the youth. Subsequently adults reverted back to dial watches. But teens still choose to wear dynamically coloured plastic watches with roman numerals. The Movado design was a status symbol featuring a sleek design and a dot at 12. Wearing two watches on the same arm became a fashion. Gold bracelets and hoop earrings grew to become popular in this time.

Other trend setters listed designer bags made from leather. Clutch bags were popular as these were compact and thus appealing. Briefcases were also in huge numbers. Women tried to match shoe colors with their bags. Shawls in various designs and colors became a favorite of the women. These shawls could be put on with tops in the day and gowns at night. Designer underwear also set styles. Women preferred the ones with laces and light colors. Vibrant boxer shorts in different patterns and stripes became available for men. Small eye glasses with metal frames became a rage over these days. However round and small glasses continued to be popular in the entire 80’s. Fashion had heavy impact on everyday living of those decades.
